A SMALL FOOTPRINT

A note on privacy.

This journal uses its own basic analytics to understand which pages are read. There are no advertising pixels, social tracking widgets, or third-party analytics scripts.

What is counted

A page load, the page path without query parameters, a referring domain, a broad device category, and the time of the visit. The application does not store visitor IP addresses or full user-agent strings in its analytics database.

Anonymous cookies

Two first-party cookies estimate readership: a random visitor identifier that expires after 30 days without a visit, and a visit identifier that expires after 30 minutes of inactivity. Only daily salted hashes are stored temporarily; they are never displayed in the admin area. Counts are approximate. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are respected.

Retention

Detailed page-view rows are retained for 90 days when the daily cleanup task runs. Anonymous daily and page-level totals are retained. Expired hashed identifiers are removed after two days.

Hosting and administration

The hosting provider may keep its own access logs under its retention policy. Administrators use a separate secure session cookie to sign in. Their visits are excluded from journal analytics.

Resonance and sharing

When you react, a random first-party cookie remembers your browser for up to one year. We store a separate, secret-keyed hash for each article to prevent duplicate reactions. You can click Resonated again to remove your reaction. Clearing cookies or using another browser can count as another reader, so reactions are approximate.

Share actions record the article, action type, and time, without an identifier, IP address, user-agent string, fingerprint, or social account information. They indicate an action started here, not a confirmed social post. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control disable share-action recording; reactions you explicitly choose still work. Reaction records and anonymous share actions remain until removed with the article (or, for reactions, by you). Engagement counts are private to the administrator.
